Abstract
Gossip protocol is a computer protocol that is based on the dissemination of information through periodic and random exchange of messages between network participants. The goal of such a protocol is to inform the network quickly and efficiently about new information. Often called the epidemic protocol, it got its name because of the unique spread of information like a virus. The topic of this thesis is the development of an application using the gossip protocol. Through this paper, the features, and applications of the gossip protocol as well as its variations are described. Also, the basics of peer-to-peer communication as well as the basic paradigms of wireless sensor networks are explained. Through practical work, the gossip protocol was implemented on a wireless network, and its behavior and features were described. Through practical implementation, the effectiveness of the implemented protocol and efficiency in performing the task of monitoring the status of network participants was demonstrated and tested. Through testing, where six computers were set up in a network and analyzed with the Wireshark tool, gossip protocol has proven to be an efficient and unique solution for transmitting information. Tests have shown it to be a reliable and robust solution resistant to sudden changes in the network. Even with its unpredictable nature, considering the random peer selection, with the testing protocol proved to be stable and equal in its data distribution.
Abstract (croatian)
Gossip protokol je računalni protokol koji se temelji na širenju informacija povremenom i slučajnom razmjenom poruka među sudionicima mreže. Cilj takvog protokola je brzo i učinkovito informiranje mreže o novim informacijama. Često nazvan epidemiološkim protokolom, ime je dobio zbog jedinstvenog širenja informacija poput virusa. Tema ovog diplomskog rada je razvoj aplikacije pomoću gossip protokola. Kroz ovaj rad opisane su značajke i primjene gossip protokola, kao i njegove varijacije. Također se objašnjavaju osnove peer-to-peer komunikacije, kao i osnovne paradigme bežičnih senzorskih mreža. U praktičnom dijelu rada gossip protokol je implementiran na bežičnoj mreži te je opisano njegovo ponašanje i značajke. Praktičnom provedbom demonstrirana je i testirana učinkovitost implementiranog protokola i učinkovitost u izvršavanju zadaće praćenja statusa sudionika mreže. Testiranjem, gdje je šest računala bilo postavljeno u mrežu i analizirano alatom Wireshark, gossip protokol se pokazao kao učinkovito i jedinstveno rješenje za prijenos informacija. Testovi su pokazali da je to pouzdano i robusno rješenje otporno na iznenadne promjene u mreži. Čak i sa svojom nepredvidivom prirodom, uzimajući u obzir slučajni odabir sudionika za razmjenu poruka na mreži, gossip protokol se pokazao stabilnim i pravednim u distribuciji mrežnih podataka.
